Giorgio Minotti Cardiotoxicity of Non-Cardiovascular Drugs

Some drugs which are not aimed at treating heart disease have nevertheless been found to have profound effects on heart muscle. Cardiotoxicity is one of the major forms of toxicity seen in drugs and it accounts for most drug recalls and delays experienced in regulatory approvals. In recent years a number of non-cardiac blockbuster drugs such as terfenadine have been withdrawn from major markets because of cardiotoxicity concerns, while other drugs have either been withdrawn prior to marketing or required labelling changes that significantly restricted their use. In Cardiotoxicity of Non-Cardiovascular Drugs international experts describe the molecular mechanisms and clinical read-outs of cardiac events induced by a broad variety of noncardiovascular drugs. Particular emphasis is paid to the preclinical screening of drug cardiotoxicity. Topics include: metabolic targets of cardiotoxicity regulatory aspects translating molecular mechanisms into clinical trials structure-activity relationships in arrhythmias by antihistamines and psychoactive drugs cardiovascular toxicity of antitumor drugs cardiovascular toxicities of non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs cardiovascular toxicities of antiretroviral therapies Cardiotoxicity of Non-Cardiovascular Drugs is an essential guide to this important area of drug development. It will find a place on the bookshelves of researchers, regulators and students in medicinal chemistry, drug development, pharmacology, pharmacy and cardiovascular disease.

Drugs of Abuse

Drug abuse directly influences the economic and social aspects of a country. The objectives of this study were to determine the knowledge level and perception about drugs of abuse from students of private Universities in Dhaka, Bangladesh. Private University students were chosen as that they represent parts of the youth of Bangladesh who mostly abuses illicit drugs. Data were collected from the students by a questionnaire form. Samples consisted of both undergraduate (83%) and graduate (17%) students (n=344). Most of the participants were male (82%) and Muslim (89%). About 23% of the participants were using different or at least one illicit drug. Almost all students (95%) had some sort of knowledge about drugs of abuse including their harmful effects. Despite some limitations, this study gives an idea about the level of knowledge and perception towards drugs of abuse from students from private Universities. The Government of Bangladesh should take immediate initiatives to increase the knowledge level on drugs of abuse among young students otherwise they will turn out to be potential user of illicit drugs.

Knowledge on Health Effects of Drug Abuse

This work was developed in response to the increase in number of youth abusing drugs. Prevention of drug abuse is important to the health and socioeconomic stability of a country because the cost of substance abuse affects the well being of the population in all these aspects. In Kenya drug abuse contributes to rising health care costs especially in the management of drug abuse complications like alcoholism, drug addiction, diabetes, cirrhosis, cardiovascular diseases, cancer and neo - natal disorders. This descriptive cross sectional study was conducted in Nyalenda Estate, Kisumu East, Nyanza Province of Kenya on 383 youth drug users selected purposively. The study employed both quantitative and qualitative methods of data collection. The findings revealed that age and sex of the respondents and knowledge of health effects of abused drugs had an influence in drug abuse among the youth. The commonly abused drugs were bhang, local alcoholic brew (chang’aa), and tobacco. Although the youth knew the health effects of drug abuse many of the youth did not associate the habit with common medical conditions like heart problems among others.

Alexander Ruban V. The Photosynthetic Membrane. Molecular Mechanisms and Biophysics of Light Harvesting

The proteins that gather light for plant photosynthesis are embedded within cell membranes in a site called the thylakoid membrane (or the «photosynthetic membrane»). These proteins form the light harvesting antenna that feeds with energy a number of vital photosynthetic processes such as water oxidation and oxygen evolution, the pumping of protons across the thylakoid membranes coupled with the electron transport chain of the photosystems and cytochrome b6f complex, and ATP synthesis by ATP synthase utilizing the generated proton gradient. The Photosynthetic Membrane: Molecular Mechanisms and Biophysics of Light Harvesting is an introduction to the fundamental design and function of the light harvesting photosynthetic membrane, one of the most common and most important structures of life. It describes the underlying structure of the membrane, the variety and roles of the membrane proteins, the atomic structures of light harvesting complexes and their macromolecular assemblies, the molecular mechanisms and dynamics of light harvesting and primary energy transformations, and the broad range of adaptations to different light environments. The book shows, using the example of the photosynthetic membrane, how complex biological structures utilize principles of chemistry and physics in order to carry out biological functions. The Photosynthetic Membrane: Molecular Mechanisms of Light Harvesting will appeal to a wide audience of undergraduate and postgraduate students as well as researchers working in the fields of biochemistry, molecular biology, biophysics, plant science and bioengineering.

It is more important to understand the basic physiology and pharmacology behind the success or failure.Though it might look complicated and difficult;the depth of knowledge of a particular subject will make better physician and surgeon. In the era of internet it is easy to get the details of any topic but it has not yet replaced the books, where the concise and accurate facts are written. Informations on the internet are sometimes vague, too detailed and inaccurate sometimes. There were not many drugs which were used in eye, so ocular pharmacology was part of ophthalmology text books. This book has been written to provide the reader with a quick review of the drugs used in Eye. There are few books on the subject and the text books of eye do not mention the details of the drugs used in eye. Some new drugs have been developed in recent years, which are used exclusively in the eye and their details is only available in journals and internet. So the book will be of use for both students & practitioner.
