Influence of Home and ECD exposure on education of young children

This retrospective study of 535 children and their primary caregivers focuses on factors that influence age appropriate school entry and grade progression. The children studied live in a peri-urban community in Kampala, Uganda and were eight years old at the time of the study. The study examined the influence of family variables, home life stress events, exposure to early childhood development (ECD) services on age at school entry and educational grade transitions of young children. This is very useful given the relative lack of African studies of this size and nature. Descriptive and correlational, as well as regression analyses, are included in the findings. The major findings from this study are: status of caregivers, ECD history, child age at ECD enrolment, type of ECD attended, life stress events in the household, are significantly related to children school status and progression.

Children- the real decision makers

This book illustrates that besides being customers in their own right, children’s influence on family purchasing is steadily increasing. They have a direct as well as an indirect influence on the purchase of consumer durables in a household. The research probes into the factors influencing the behavior and decisions of children. While parents, family dynamics and external exposure influence children, the impact of media was found to be significant. Demographic factors such as age and gender also reflect and determine the influence of children on parental decisions. A sound understanding of children’s influence on household purchase, and children-focused marketing campaigns would help in corralling young consumers and set a course for predictable future sales growth.

The Persistence of 2nd Generation Cambodian American College Students

This study seeks to investigate an interesting and understudied case of the persistence and retention of immigrant students in postsecondary education. Specifically, the study examines the way family dynamics of second-generation Cambodian college students influence their success in postsecondary education. Currently, much of the academic literature examining Southeast Asian Americans concentrates on other ethnic groups besides Cambodians, who are less numerous in education, and pays little attention to the unique convergence of family, cultural, and historical forces and conditions at play in these young adults’ educational experience in the United States. Therefore, the purpose of this research is to build on previous works that are similarly related to the issues at hand, and to develop a deeper, more nuanced understanding of the educational trajectory of these young people, with the ultimate hope of improving their educational experiences.

Influence Of Reproductive Health Training In Girls' Education

The role of women's contribution to meaningful development cannot be fully addressed without investigating women's participation in Education and issues surrounding their ability to participate fully in Education. Reproductive Health related issues has consequently been identified as one of the major challenges that women/girls face in their quest for Education. While a handful of handful of studies have been carried out on the best practices in girls' education, there is no comprehensive study that has been done on the influence reproductive health education on promotion of girl-child education thus leaving a wide knowledge gap. The book 'influence of reproductive in profiting girl-child education' brings together the practical experience I have had in the past five years of implementing Education programs through investigation of a model employed by FAWEK.

The purposeful sample used consisted of four primary schools in Chivi South District, Masvingo Region and involved four teachers and eight pupils from schools. For data collection the interview, document analysis and field notes were used. The interview used followed the guidelines of Bogdan and Biklen (1992), Maykut and Morehouse (1994) and Krathwohl (1993) who discuss how to use the interview in social research and education. The use of documents and field notes was guided by Krathwohl‘s work of (1993) on methods of Educational and Social Science Research. To analyse data, emergent categories were used and the results of the study confirmed that exposure to ECD programme enhances pupil performance at grade one level. Teachers favour to teach pupils who have done the ECD programme because they have the base upon which they can build. Implications of the Academic Performance of Prospective Teachers

The aim of the book was to examine the influence of some background and environmental factors on the academic performance of students of the College of Education, Addis Ababa University. Results suggested that it was the combined effect of both background and environmental variables. And, this was positively related to level of academic background, duration of prior exposure to the medium of instruction in college, getting placed into the COE based on choice, effort, and getting placed into major area of study on first choice. Results also suggested that there were significant differences between male and female students. On the contrary, academic performance was low due to low-level of influence exerted by inadequate provision of suitable classroom learning environment, and inadequate provision of academic support in the form of tutorial classes and reference materials. Level of parental education was not found out to have statistically significant relationship with academic performance. Thus, it was concluded that the low level of academic performance was influenced by all the factors except parental education. On the basis of the conclusions, some recommendations were made.

Impact of Living Conditions On Child Development Pathways

The proliferation of institutional care for children makes it increasingly imperative to understand the exact nature of services that these facilities provide and the impact they have on children. Although cyclically embraced as a promising alternative for children in foster care, there has been growing concern about its impact on children, especially the young ones below the age of six years. This study determined the impact of living conditions on infant feeding and growth patterns for such young children in Lusaka Urban. Evidence from the study sampled of 280 young children showed that the impact of living conditions on child survival prospects was only significantly associated with one out of the five child development outcomes investigated, namely: child feeding pattern for the first six months of life. Young children who were under residential care were more likely to be appropriately fed than those who were home-based (RR = 0.80, 95 % CI 0.66, 0.96). In essence, intensification of feeding counseling and integrated growth monitoring promotion were required for caregivers under both modes of care, but more so for children who were home-based.

Family Preferences of Normal and Neglected Children

Family is the most important part of the child’s “social network”. The family members constitute the child’s first environment and they are the most significant people during the early, formative years. These foundations laid in the home at such a young age may change and modify b they are never completely eradicated. Instead they influence later attitudes and behavioural patterns. How much influence and what form this influence will take in the child’s development will depend upon two conditions, the kind of family exert similar influence on children. The emotional distance and relationship that exists between the child and the family members determine the level of influence that family members exert on the child. There is enough evidence to believe that the technique of family drawings can clearly project various aspects of the family dynamics. But this method so far has not been employed to find out the family preferences of neglected children, even though it was successfully used with normal children With the assumption that neglected children's family preferences differ as a result of pathogenic family conditions, in the present study it is aimed at to probe into this issue.

Home-School Collaborative Programs for Preschoolers

Family unit plays an important role in meeting the needs of children in school, specifically preschoolers. Children move between two influential environments that build attitudes and readiness for learning: the home and the school. Starting school is an important time for young children, their families, and educators. . It has been described as "one of the major challenges children have to face in their early childhood years" (Victorian Department of School Education, 1992, p. 44), "a big step for all children and their families" (New South Wales Department of School Education, 1997, p. 8), and "a key life cycle transition both in and outside school" (Pianta & Cox, 1999, p. xvii). For this reason Home-School Collaborative Programs are very important.

School, a Miniature of Society

In young multicultural Finland, fresh generations of immigrants are born and grow up fast. Many find themselves living in their fatherland as Finns. Compared to their parents, they have extra obligations and demands on society. Poor education, unemployment, and blue collar jobs are high among immigrant youth in Finland. This book examines the role of the Finnish education system and school experiences on life, and the education and career plan of the participants as young Iranians in Finland. Since the influential factors that affect those plans are similar for other young immigrants in Finland, it indirectly involves the future of tens of thousands of potential fresh labour forces. Multiple theories and research on education and career of ethnic minorities influence the study. Theoretical standpoints include acculturation, transnational migration, and narrative explanation. The data is composed of narratives about the participants with especial attention given to their school experiences. It employs qualitative research methodology, face to face interview and participant observation. The results can be useful for education decision makers, school staff, employers, researchers etc.
